Just don’t worry…

Alfred kept silently repeating those words in his head as he looked at the crying girl. Poor Alyssa…she really did miss her best friend. Hopefully nobody knew that he was the last person the victim was with…if Alyssa knew…oh god, Alfred would probably have to kill her too!

But…he wouldn’t want to kill her. No, he never wanted to kill! He was the hero! Heroes don’t kill! They stop the villains! The bad guys!

He sighed as he remembered that the villain was himself.

How can one be both the hero and the villain?

Placing his head on his desk, he unintentionally remembered the last night’s events…

~the last night~

The teenage boy known as Alfred was sitting at a table at some restaurant with a beautiful girl. She was Kelly Johnson, the daughter of a successful business man. Like her best friend Alyssa, Kelly was always getting what she wanted.

Tossing her brunette curls over her shoulder, she smiled across from Alfred. “I think it’s odd we’re out eating this early,” she said.

Alfred checked his watch. 5:48 p.m. “Yeah, sorry about that. It’s just…” He tried to think of a good excuse as Kelly’s emerald eyes bore into him. “…um…my mom really needs me home early tonight, and I couldn’t refuse your offer…”

He really couldn’t refuse her offer to go out with him. It would be kind of rude if he didn’t, plus her father would probably hire somebody to hunt him down. He shivered as that image crossed his mind.

Kelly played with the leaves in her salad as Alfred checked his watch again, even though it had only been a minute since he last checked it. She sighed. “Why do you keep checking your watch…?”

He looked up at her again. “Oh…my mom wants me home by six thirty and…I guess I’m just worried that I won’t be on time,” he said, giving a fake smile and laugh.

This didn’t convince the girl. “But you keep checking your watch every minute. You can’t be that worried, can you?”

“My mom’s an aggressive person.”

“She can’t be that bad. Does she at least know you’re with me? Maybe you can appeal to her sense of mercy and spend the night with me~” She said this last part sensually, her eyes full of lust.

That made him shiver again. C’mon Alfred, think of a better excuse!

“N-no! I mean—uh, my mom, she probably wouldn’t want me staying out at night too late…”

“You can tell her you spent that night at Kiku’s house. She’d probably believe you~ And she wouldn’t hear anything from me.”

He felt a bead of sweat on his forehead. This probably wasn’t the right time to tell Kelly he didn’t actually have a mother…

He must have spent a long time thinking about what to say next, because the next thing he knew, he checked his watch and it was 5:55 p.m.

I have to get out of here!  he thought. I’m already later than I wanted to be!!

Standing from the table and trying to keep his cool, he looked at Kelly and smiled. “I’m sorry, but I’ve really got to go now. It was nice spending time with you.” And he turned and ran for the door.

“Wait!” Kelly cried, standing from the table as well and leaving enough money on the table to pay for their meal and still leave the waiter with an enormous tip. She ran after Alfred desperately. “Where are you going?”

Trying to avoid her, he sped up.

“Come back! I want to talk to you before you go!” she yelled behind him.

Keep going, don’t let her catch up!

Too bad. Though Kelly was one of those snobby girls who you would never expect to even try to lift a finger doing anything athletic, she caught up to Alfred with ease when he turned and ran into a dark alley.

“Why did you leave so quickly?” she muttered, breathing heavily from running. “Are you seeing someone else?”

Glancing at his watch again, Alfred gasped. 5:59! Only a minute until he…he…

“Kelly,” he said suddenly, grabbing her shoulders firmly and staring her in the eye. “Run. Get somewhere safe. Now.”

“Wait, what?” she muttered. “What are you talking ab—?”

“Don’t ask any questions!” he interrupted harshly. He let go of her and turned. “Just go! Quickly before--…” he stopped himself there.

“Before what?” she demanded. “What’s going to happen? Why do I have to go somewhere safe?”

“Just do it! There’s only a minute left!”

What’s going to happen in a minute?!

“I’m going to—”

Too late.

For at the moment, the clock struck six. And Alfred began to change. Literally.

The poor girl watched as he did. And she finally understood why she had to leave. But he wouldn’t let her escape—oh no, he wouldn’t.

“I told you to run…” he muttered, his voice strangely less cheerful and deeper than before. He turned to her, and her eyes widened. This was not the Alfred she had asked out. He was…different…what happened to him? His hair was darker, his eyes were RED! That doesn’t just happen…right?

“You didn’t listen to me,” he said, chuckling to himself as he took a few steps closer to Kelly. “You should have listened, doll~”

She finally got enough courage to speak. “W-who are you…? You’re not Alfred!”

He let out a snort and smirked. “Really? I’m not Alfred? Then, who am I?” He stepped closer and closer until he was right in front of her.

“Y-y-y….you’re not him!”

A gloved hand struck her in the face. “That doesn’t answer my question, doll. But don’t worry~ I’ll give you time to answer. Maybe by the time I’m done with you, you’ll know who I am. In fact, you’ll be screaming my name, begging for mercy!!

Kelly wanted to run. She wanted to fight back. She wanted to do something so badly. But she couldn’t. She was frozen. Why, oh why, was it now her body decided not to move?!

“That’s right. Don’t fight back. You have no power over me.” He laughed darkly, looking over to a pipe that was on the wall of the alley. He ripped a part of the pipe off and spinned it in his hand. “You’ll have no way to fight back…”

She saw the pipe in his hand and gasped. “Y-you wouldn’t!”

“Oh, would I~? You don’t know me, babe!” He raised the pipe high over his head, and—

“Mr. Jones!” Mr. Birch screamed. Alfred’s head came off his desk and found that the teacher was now right in front of him. “You come late to class and then you’re sleeping in the middle of my lesson?” He grumbled some barely audible words and turned back to the class. “This is the perfect example as to why you all failed your tests. You have to pay attention!” He turned back to Alfred, waiting for a response from the boy.

“Eh, um…sorry sir. Won’t happen again!” was what Alfred responded.

Mr. Birch nodded, grumbled some more words that no one could hear, and went back to the board to continue teaching.

Alfred sighed. It would never happen again…That was all he could hope for…Hope that none of this would ever happen again…
